Money

Turkish currency is called New Turkish Lira. Shortly YTL. (Yeni Türk Lira)

To see how many Turkish Lira you get for for your currency, please click on the Personal Currency Assistant which enables you to make currency conversions on actual rates.

Turkish Lira is fully convertible. There is no currency black market.

Turkish Lira is freely sold and bought in hotels, banks and special exchange offices called "döviz bürosu". The best rates you can get in special exchange offices which are open even on Saturdays. Even if you can not speak the local language, take a look at their modern electronic exchange tables which can be seen from outside. Start your day with a glance at the exchange rates. If you are in tourist locations like Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, in a travel agency, post offices (PTT) or in a good restaurant, many of the shop owners would offer you the same service. The worst exchange rates are offered in hotels and banks. The market and the central bank exchange rates are listed in newspapers. Look for the page called "ekonomi". Be careful for national holidays in which all banks are closed.

Since the value of Turkish Lira constantly drops (compared to US$), it is a good idea to change your money every few days instead of only once at the beginning of your stay.

Keep all the receipts and documents you receive when you exchange money. You may need them.

DO NOT EXCHANGE ANY MONEY ON THE STREET, YOU MAY GET COUNTERFEIT MONEY OR PURSE SNATCHERS.

Turkish Liras are not worth as much out of country, so change them back to your currency before you leave Turkey.
